Marathon Runner Shell Skins

Marathon shell skins are Deluxe Runner styles and orientation cosmetics earned through the Codex. Each of the seven Runner shells has its own mastery section (five PvP challenges) and orientation section (20 exfils, 50 tactical ability uses, 25 prime ability uses).

Complete all five mastery challenges on a shell and you unlock the Shadow Index style for that Runner. Orientation rewards are separate: emblems and profile backgrounds. Codex progress never resets.

What Are Shell Skins in Marathon?

In-game they're Deluxe Runner Shell styles in the Codex; we use “shell skins” because that's what people search. You can earn them two ways without buying battle pass or store items:

Codex (per shell)

• Mastery: Five PvP challenges – kills under specific conditions (ability use, weapon type, exfil state). Complete all five → Shadow Index style for that Runner.
• Orientation: Three milestones – 20 exfils on that shell, 50 tactical uses, 25 prime uses. Rewards: that shell's emblem and profile background.

Faction Sponsored Kits

• Exfil while using a faction's Sponsored Kit (free or paid from the Armory).
• Unlock that faction's shell styles – one per Runner, six shells per faction, color-matched to the faction. Claim in Codex → Factions.

Shadow Index from Codex is the main long-term grind; faction shells are an extra free option tied to running Sponsored Kit loadouts.

How to Get Marathon Shell Skins

No Silk or premium pass needed. Two free routes:

Codex:

• Mastery: Free. Progress is permanent. Conditions are strict – e.g. defeat a Runner from 20m above as Vandal, or knife a Runner while Signal Mask is active as Rook – so it's slow if you don't main that shell or play a lot of PvP.
• Orientation: Free. Straight grind per shell: 20 exfils, 50 tactical uses, 25 prime uses. No reset.

Faction Skins:

• Exfil with that faction's Sponsored Kit (free or paid). Free kits are weak but reusable – run until you exfil, then claim the style in Codex → Factions.

Battle pass and store may add more shell looks later; Codex and faction unlocks stay earnable in-game.

How Shell Mastery and Orientation Work

Each of the seven Runners has two Codex sections. They're separate: orientation is a grind; mastery is PvP under strict conditions.

Orientation:

• Three milestones per shell: 20 successful exfils on that shell, 50 tactical ability uses, 25 prime ability uses.
• Rewards: one or two emblems and a profile background for that shell.

Mastery:

• Five PvP challenges per shell. Each has specific conditions – e.g. kill after using a certain ability, kill with a weapon shortly after movement or utility use, or exfil under a condition (e.g. block damage with Riot Barricade right before exfil).
• Complete all five → Deluxe Runner Shell style from the Shadow Index set (series names vary by shell: Void, Glitch, Aux, ICON, etc.).

Progress:

• Account-wide. Does not reset between seasons.
• All seven Shadow Index styles = all five mastery challenges completed on each of the seven shells.
