What Is Pinwheel in Marathon?

Pinwheel Base is the high-value loot site on Outpost. The base has weapon lockers that drop blue and purple weapons, loot carts with high-tier mods, and implants. Past the main floor is the Command Wing – a locked inner section behind a blue security door that holds the best loot in the base: prestige-rarity attachments and valuables that auto-sell for credits when you extract.

Getting to the Command Wing is a two-stage problem. First you get into the base. Then you unlock the wing itself.

How to Get Into Pinwheel Base

Three entry routes exist, and which one you use depends on what you're carrying and how the run is going:

1. Supply Clearance Codes + Elevator – Collect two color-matched Supply Clearance Codes from around Outpost (colors rotate each run across Green, Red/Orange, and Yellow terminals in Flight Control, Processing, and Dormitories). Input them at a terminal, survive the UESC wave, ride the elevator up.
2. Conveyance Request keycard – Find this keycard and use it at the Drone Wing to call an elevator via crane. No codes needed. Can be extracted and brought back into future runs.
3. Destroyed Wing generator panels – Shoot four white boxes with red lights on the Destroyed Wing exterior. Spawn locations randomize each run.

Entry timing matters. Another squad using the same route means you're fighting for the same door.

How to Enter the Command Wing

Once inside Pinwheel Base, the Command Wing has its own unlock. Two blue terminals must be activated – one in the left room immediately past the blue-and-white UESC door, one deeper in the right room. Both must be hit before the Command Wing door opens.

When it opens, four UESC units spawn immediately, then multiple waves including enemies with purple shields. These take significantly more damage to break than standard UESC. The prestige attachments and valuables are in the wing's containers and side rooms.

What Are Prestige Attachments in Marathon?

Weapon rarity in Marathon is determined by attachments, not the base gun. A gray and gold version of the same weapon deal identical base damage – rarity comes from what's slotted. Prestige-tier chip mods are the top of that system. They add ability-like perks: passive effects that change how the weapon plays, not just stat bumps. Examples include invisibility on reload after a kill or AoE bursts on consecutive shots.

Prestige chips can be transferred between weapons. If you pull one from a Command Wing container, it can go on any compatible weapon in your stash. That's what makes the Command Wing worth the entry fight – the attachments have value beyond the gun they dropped on.

What Are Valuables in Marathon?

Valuables are items with a money bag symbol that auto-sell for credits the moment you extract. They don't go into your stash. On Outpost they also show up from Deluxe and Superior locked key rooms (Clearance, Supply, Master codes), Convoy and Warden events, and the Command Wing in Pinwheel – names like Xenobiopsy and The Severed Twins sit on that list.

Superior (purple) valuables average around 4000 credits each on exfil. Prestige (yellow) valuables average around 12000, and the strongbox at the end of the Command Wing is one of the few places that can drop them. Why Is Pinwheel Hard to Farm Solo?

Run can fail in three separate places. Entry is contested – another squad can use the same route and be at the door before you. Inside the base, slow room routing means the best containers get looted by whoever got there first. The Command Wing adds a third failure point: the terminal unlock triggers a UESC wave, and if you're solo, holding the room while activating both terminals is difficult.

Most solo Outpost runs either skip the Command Wing entirely or lose the loot on the way out. Knowing the entry route isn't the problem. Executing all three stages – entry, Command Wing unlock, extraction – without losing the run is.
