What Is Compiler in Marathon?

Compiler is a boss inside Vault 7 of Cryo Archive. It's the first true boss fight in Marathon and the hardest PvE encounter in game at launch.

Fight is multi-phase akin to Destiny 2 Raids/Dungeons:

1. Phase 1 is a coordination puzzle involving Link Terminals and incoming orb projectiles
2. Phase 2 is a timed damage window on the Compiler's exposed core, and both phases cycle until the boss is dead. One player has to run dedicated orb duty the entire fight or the squad wipes.

Compiler drops a Compiler Ganglion on death – a Contraband Eccentric Salvage item worth 8000 credits that can be exchanged at CyberAcme Market for Hyphatic Gel, a Prestige ammo material.

Loot room behind it has Prestige-tier implants, mods, salvage, and Contraband weapons including Biotoxic Disinjector – a hybrid human/alien weapon with both grenade and beam fire modes. A Security Clearance 5 door inside the loot room holds additional rewards.

How to Unlock Vault 7 in Cryo Archive

Vault 7 doesn't open with a key. It opens when you've collected all 6 AI Subroutines from Vaults 1–6 and completed access puzzle.

Each Subroutine is a separate RNG drop inside its corresponding vault – there is no guarantee it spawns, and the game can glitch and not produce it at all. If it doesn't appear, you run the vault again.

Process for each vault follows:

1. Find the vault key – Vault keys are rare drops from higher-risk activities across all planetside zones. Each vault has its own key. Keys for Vaults 1–2 are purple; Vaults 3–6 are gold. Gold keys require additional credentials beyond batteries and coolant.
2. Gather batteries – You need roughly 10 per run. Scanners on the map walls can mark battery locations. Every vault uses them to power the door and the cryo chamber.
3. Fill a cryocoolant container – Find an empty container in Preservation, bring it to the pit in Control, insert batteries, and fill it. Pit has a freeze effect – shoot green targets on the walls to disable it temporarily.
4. Meet the vault's extra credential requirement – Vaults 3–6 each need a specific item or credential on top of batteries and coolant:
   • Vault 3 – Pump Station credential key, found near an outer-map boss
   • Vault 4 – Colonist credentials, obtained by shooting down a drone carrying a body near Vault 5's location, looting the DNA samples, and processing them at a terminal in Control (triggers a lockdown wave)
   • Vault 5 – Tranquility key, found in one of two Tranquility rooms near Control
   • Vault 6 – Security Clearance 4 required, plus an antivirus item; the vault is in a lab above Preservation with no minimap, a gold-tier enemy, and a unique three-symbol puzzle that must be solved in correct order (left, top, right) matching symbols from a separate room earlier in the run
5. Solve the vault puzzle – Every vault has the same core mechanic: a symbol on the wall when you enter, three matching terminals in the room, hack all three. If you fail, a freeze effect activates – shoot a green target to reset and try again.
6. Pick up the AI Subroutine – It's a small gold chip in the vault loot room. Miss it and you have to run vault again. Exfil with it, and it's permanently unlocked in your Codex.

Once all 6 are in your Codex, Vault 7 becomes accessible. You still need Security Clearance 5 to enter – the highest clearance tier.

Why AI Subroutine Grind Is Brutal

Vault keys are rare. Vault 6 specifically needs a gold key that's harder to find than the others. AI Subroutine itself is an RNG drop inside the vault – not guaranteed, can glitch out entirely. And every subroutine has to survive exfil to count. Die before extraction, and you will have to repeat it.

Vault 6 is the worst. Security Clearance 4 requirement, an antivirus item, a lab with no minimap, a gold-tier enemy, and a puzzle that requires memorizing symbols from a different room earlier in the same run. Most players who attempt Cryo Archive never get past Vault 3 or 4.

Marathon's community estimate is that fewer than 0.1% of players who enter Cryo Archive have completed all 6 vaults and killed Compiler.

Cryo Shift shell style is one of the rarest cosmetics in Marathon right now – it comes from completing Runners Codex section inside Cryo Archive, which requires killing Compiler with each of 6 shells (S'phticide challenges).

Most players who have it were in the first groups to clear Vault 7 in the game's opening weekend.

What Is Cryo Shift Shell Style?

Cryo Shift is a Superior Runner Shell style, part of the Glitch series. It unlocks through Cryo Archive Codex – specifically S'phticide challenges, which require eliminating a Compiler and exfiling from Cryo Archive using each of the 6 shells (Vandal, Triage, Destroyer, Assassin, Thief, Recon). Each challenge requires a separate Compiler kill with the corresponding shell equipped.

Style description references Cryo Archive lore directly: words heard by those who breach the vaults, buried in synthetic pathways of the neural housing.
