What Is Cryo Archive in Marathon?

Cryo Archive is the fourth map and the endgame zone on the UESC Marathon. It is not another normal planetside route. The map runs on different pressure: Compilers as special enemy encounters, security progression, AI Subroutines, and Codex sections built around systems that feel more like endgame raid objectives than regular loot farming.

Even before every hidden part is fully mapped, the structure already shows what kind of grind this is. Specific access gates, five Codex sections, and challenge progress that can die on one failed extraction.

The run flow is straightforward even if the map is hard: meet entry gates, pick the objective focus, clear encounter chains, then extract cleanly so progress counts. A failed exfil can invalidate long objective setup, which is why Cryo sessions are built around completion plus extraction, not combat alone.

What Does Cryo Archive Require to Enter?

The entry gates are the hardest in Marathon:

1. Level 25
2. All six factions unlocked – CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, Arachne, Sekiguchi Genetics – through their intro or liaison contracts
3. 5000 credit loadout value per run

What Codex Sections Does Cryo Archive Have?

Cryo Archive Codex has five sections:

1. Orientation (2 challenges) – Initial Cryo runs and exfils
2. Exploration (8 challenges) – Region-based container progress across Control, Cargo, Index, Biostock, Preservation, Steerage, and Revival
3. Collectibles (9 challenges) – Expedition Manifests, UESC Marathon Models, Cryoprotectant, Compiler Traces, Bernard Strauss's Journal entries, and more
4. Cryo Vault (8 challenges) – AI Subroutines 01 through 06, DNA Network Access, and Introduction to the Unknown (exfil 6 unique subroutines + access Archive 07)
5. Runners (6 challenges) – S'PHTICIDE shell-specific completions: eliminate a Compiler and exfil using Vandal, Triage, Destroyer, Assassin, Thief, or Recon

That is 33 visible challenges total. Completing Exploration unlocks the Cryonaut profile background. Completing all Runner challenges unlocks the Cryo Shift shell style series (Glitch for Vandal, Aux for Triage, Locus for Destroyer, Void for Assassin, Icon for Thief, Blackbird for Recon).

Why Is Cryo Archive the Hardest Map?

Cryo Archive stacks multiple pain points at once. The entry gate is high before the run even starts, which already filters out weak accounts. Then the map asks for objective routing, endgame combat, special item handling, and clean extractions on top of it.

Cryologist challenges point toward hidden caches, security scans, clearance progression, batteries, hatches, and heavy UESC kill volume. Cryo Vault needs multi-step AI Subroutine chains and Archive 07 access.

Compilers add another layer because they are tied to special encounters that are harder to find and harder to kill than normal enemies. Progress is tied to objectives that collapse if the run goes wrong at the end.
