What Is Vidmaster Title

VIDMASTER is a Prestige Profile Title – Marathon's highest cosmetic title tier, above Superior. It's earned by completing 7 challenges in the Vidmaster section of the Codex.

The title is a direct reference to the original Marathon trilogy's Vidmaster Challenges from the 1990s, which required players to complete the games on maximum difficulty under strict self-imposed rules.

Bungie carried that naming into the 2026 game as the badge for players who finish its most demanding Cryo Archive content.

The flavor text reads: "Just Vid It. With Style!"

Most challenges require specific combat conditions – melee-only runs, grenade-method kills, no-heal Cryo Archive exfils. Four of the seven challenges can only be completed inside Cryo Archive during the Thursday–Sunday access window.

All 7 Vidmaster Challenges

     THIS IS DEDICATION SYNDROME – Complete all CyberAcme Cryo Archive limited contracts in a single weekend.

All seven contracts must be completed before Sunday 10 AM PT. Progress resets if the weekend closes before you've finished. Reward: CRYO DESTROYER Deluxe Profile Background.

     CARRY YOUR SCARS – Exfil from Cryo Archive without using any healing consumables.

One successful exfil with zero healing items used during that run. If you take damage and try to heal, the challenge fails for that session. Reward: PURE PUNISHMENT Deluxe Profile Background.

     DROP 7 – Eliminate 7 hostile Runners in a single run on Cryo Archive.

Seven Runner eliminations in one Cryo Archive session before you exfil or die. Reward: 7TH COLUMN Deluxe Profile Emblem.

     BEYOND THE CRIMSON VEIL [unlocks after completing challenges 1–6] – Loot the Biotoxic Disinjector from the Compiler and successfully exfiltrate.

The Compiler is a rare AI enemy that spawns in Cryo Archive. You must find it, kill it, loot the Biotoxic Disinjector from its body, and extract from the map with the item intact. If you die after looting, the item is lost. This challenge slot shows as [REDACTED] in the Codex until the other six are completed. Reward: not yet visible.

     WELCOME TO THE STAB FACTORY – Eliminate 25 hostiles with melee damage in a single run.

25 melee kills before dying or extracting. Requires a purpose-built Destroyer shell with melee-focused cores: Myrmidon (melee damage buff on thruster use) and Ankle Breaker for heat management.

Faction upgrades like HARD_STRIKE.EXE from Arachne increase melee damage output. Players in the community have noted the KNIFERUNNER skin reward feels thin for the effort required. Reward: KNIFERUNNER Deluxe Weapon Style (Utility Knife).

     JURISDICTIONAL ANNIHILATION – Eliminate a UESC Warden with a grenade.

A UESC Warden is a high-health elite NPC found in later areas of standard maps. The grenade must deliver the killing blow – any other damage source that kills it first doesn't count. Reward: XENODETONATOR Deluxe Weapon Charm.

     NO GOOD ROOKS – Eliminate 3 ROOKs in a single run.

ROOKs are other players running the Rook shell. Three kills in one session. The challenge depends on matchmaking putting ROOK players in your lobby and you eliminating them before extracting. Reward: FRAME BY FRAME Deluxe Weapon Sticker.

Why THIS IS DEDICATION SYNDROME Stops Most Players

Each contract requires a vault solve in the same run it's accepted. Vault keys drop from containers and enemies inside Cryo Archive but aren't guaranteed – some runs end without a usable key.

If you complete a contract but Cryo Archive closes before the remaining contracts are done, progress resets. The entire seven-contract sequence must be finished within one window.

One player on the official Marathon help forum described completing a contract as Cryo Archive closed for the week – the contract didn't count because the weekend session ended. The only fix was waiting for the next available weekend and completing all seven again.

Seven contracts at a minimum of one run each, each requiring a vault solve, on a map that requires Cryo Archive keys and has live PvP from other teams – that's the actual scope of "This is Dedication Syndrome."

WELCOME TO THE STAB FACTORY requires 25 melee eliminations in a single run – on any map, without dying or extracting early. This needs a full melee Destroyer build: Myrmidon Core for the thruster-activated melee damage buff, Ankle Breaker for heat management under sustained close-quarters pressure, and Arachne's HARD_STRIKE.EXE upgrade. Trying it with a standard combat build usually falls short at 15–18 kills before the run ends.

What is CARRY YOUR SCARS?

CARRY YOUR SCARS requires a successful Cryo Archive exfil without using any healing consumables during that session. You can take damage – you just can't use any healing items to recover from it. This means entering with solid gear, avoiding unnecessary fights, and surviving to exfil on whatever health you have left. One heal attempt fails the challenge for that run. What is DROP 7 challenge?

DROP 7 requires eliminating 7 hostile Runners (other players) in a single Cryo Archive run before extracting. Cryo Archive's PvP activity varies by session, but 7 kills before exfil means staying in the map long enough to find and fight multiple opposing squads. Extracting too early ends the run with fewer than 7. Reward: 7TH COLUMN Deluxe Profile Emblem.

What is BEYOND THE CRIMSON VEIL?

BEYOND THE CRIMSON VEIL shows as [REDACTED] in the Codex until you complete the other six Vidmaster challenges. Once unlocked, it requires looting the Biotoxic Disinjector from the Compiler – a rare AI enemy that spawns in Cryo Archive – and successfully exfiltrating with the item. If you die after picking up the Biotoxic Disinjector, the item is lost and you need another Compiler encounter.

Access requires Season Level 25, all six factions connected, a full squad of three, a 5000-credit minimum loadout, and is only available Thursday 10 AM – Sunday 10 AM PT.

What is a ROOK in Marathon?

ROOK is a Runner shell in Marathon. For NO GOOD ROOKS, you need to eliminate three players running the Rook shell in a single run. The challenge is matchmaking-dependent – you need three ROOK-shell opponents to show up in your lobby, and you need to kill all three before extracting or dying.

What is a UESC Warden?

UESC Wardens are elite NPC enemies patrolling specific areas of the maps. For JURISDICTIONAL ANNIHILATION, you need the grenade to deal the final killing blow. Wardens have high health pools compared to standard UESC troops, so setting up the grenade kill usually means stripping most of the health with other weapons first, then finishing with a grenade while it's at low health.

Can I buy only specific Vidmaster challenges?

The Challenge Selection add-on lets you choose only the challenges still missing from your account. If you've already done NO GOOD ROOKS and JURISDICTIONAL ANNIHILATION, we cover the remaining five.
