How Marathon Contracts Work

Contracts are Marathon's core progression loop. Before every deployment, you pick one active contract from any unlocked faction. Complete its objectives during the run, extract alive, and you earn reputation plus rewards. Simple on paper. In practice, contracts are where most players bleed time.

Three contract types exist, and each serves a different purpose.

  1. Standard contracts are repeatable. Kill UESC, loot specific containers, use abilities, deliver salvage to DCONs – straightforward tasks that build steady reputation across sessions. They rotate per faction, and if you don't like what's available, you can spend credits to reroll. Standard contracts are the grind backbone for pushing faction rank between Priority milestones.
  2. Priority contracts are one-time missions tied to faction storylines. They're required to advance your Faction Rank past certain thresholds – skip them and you hit a wall no amount of Standard grinding will fix. Priority chains like NuCaloric's Data Reconstruction (3 parts) or Traxus's Equitable Distribution (4 parts) demand multiple successful runs in sequence. MIDA's Protect/Destroy chain runs 5 parts deep. Each step completed unlocks the next, and many require finishing all objectives in a single run.
  3. Liaison contracts unlock factions. All five Liaison missions route through CyberAcme early in the game, each sending you to a different zone with faction-specific objectives. Finish one and that faction opens permanently – Liaison progress even carries between seasons, so you never redo unlocks.

Single-Run Objectives Are Where It Falls Apart

Many Priority and Liaison contracts carry an "in a single run" requirement. Every objective in that contract must be completed and extracted in one deployment. Die halfway through a multi-step mission like Traxus's Equitable Distribution 2/4 – hack a terminal in Algae Ponds, loot supplies from a Transport Drone, exfil with a manifest – and you restart the entire thing.

For Arachne, contracts demand PvP kills. Downing enemy Runners isn't optional flavor text; it's a hard requirement. Players who mostly avoid PvP engagements hit a brick wall here. And dying while hunting other Runners means losing your own gear on top of wasting contract attempt.

Multi-step chains compound this problem. NuCaloric's Data Reconstruction 3/3 asks you to hack 2 Data Repositories in North or South Relay, download an AI maintenance protocol from Hauler, and then exfil successfully – all in one run. That's three separate POI visits with UESC patrols, other Runners, and ticks between you and extraction. One bad fight near the end resets everything.

Our Marathon Contract Boost cuts through failed attempts by running each contract with extraction discipline built from months of ARC Raiders carries in the same genre. Same death-costs-everything pressure, same need to know when to pull out vs push one more objective.

Contracts as Faction Fuel

Every completed contract feeds faction reputation. Priority contracts give the largest rep chunks (150 per objective step on most chains), while Standard contracts give 60 per completion on average.

Players chasing faction rank progression still need Priority contracts done to break past rank milestones. And anyone building out upgrade trees for specific factions needs the rank those Priorities unlock before they can purchase higher-tier nodes.

Contracts also drop gear, credits, and materials on completion and extraction. Nothing is wasted – every run toward a contract feeds multiple progression systems at once.

What Makes Each Faction's Contracts Different

CyberAcme Priority contracts are the most accessible. Welcome to Tau Ceti sends you to defeat UESC patrols and scan FTL arrays in Perimeter – low-stakes objectives on a familiar map. Return on Investment asks you to exfil Frag Grenades and Claymore Mines. Good starting points with forgiving objectives.

NuCaloric shifts toward data collection and scanning. Survival Directive downloads geological surveys and botany reports from terminals in Station and Overflow. Data Reconstruction sends you hunting Bioprinters across South Relay and Overflow, then downloads reports from North Relay – spanning multiple POIs per run.

Traxus focuses on salvage and disruption. Cutthroat Competition demands Deimosite Rods from Field Maintenance in Dire Marsh. Equitable Distribution chain escalates from data drive deliveries to eliminating a traced UESC Commander.

MIDA contracts revolve around sabotage. Order/Chaos has you trigger alarms, steal Commander credentials, and download encrypted data. Protect/Destroy is a 5-part chain involving lab destruction, biohazard acquisition, malware uploads to dropships, UV Protocol tagging, and container scanning across multiple zones. Truth/Lies requires hacking a transponder in Flight Control and uploading malware to UESC dropships.

Arachne contracts demand Runners combat. PvP damage and kills are hard requirements, making these the most dangerous contracts in Marathon. Players who avoid Runner engagements can't progress Arachne without fighting.

Sekiguchi contracts center on specimen recovery and research tasks. Necrotic Sample injection, shell scanning, and Deimosite Rod collection across Dire Marsh and Outpost zones.

FAQ

What are contracts in Marathon?

Contracts are faction-assigned objectives you activate before deploying into a run. Complete the objectives and extract alive to earn reputation, XP, Codex entries, and loot rewards. You can only carry one active contract at a time, so each deployment needs a deliberate choice about which faction and mission to pursue.

What's the difference between Priority and Standard contracts?

Priority contracts are one-time story missions that push your Faction Rank past milestones and unlock Codex lore. Standard contracts are repeatable missions with simpler objectives that build steady reputation over time. You need both – Standard for consistent rep, Priority to break through rank gates.

Do I lose contract progress when I die?

It depends on the contract. Some objectives credit completion even if you fail to extract, as long as you finished the task before going down. But contracts marked "in a single run" reset entirely on death – all steps must be completed and extracted in one deployment.

How do Liaison contracts work?

Liaison contracts are one-time unlock missions assigned through CyberAcme. Each one sends you to complete faction-specific objectives – finish it once and that faction opens permanently. Liaison progress carries between seasons, so you never redo faction unlocks after Season 1.

Can I stack contracts from multiple factions?

Only one contract can be active per deployment. You pick one faction's contract before dropping in. Crew members sharing your run earn some reputation when you complete objectives, but you can't work on two contracts simultaneously.

How long does a Priority contract chain take to complete?

Varies by faction and chain length. NuCaloric's Data Reconstruction runs 3 parts, Traxus's Equitable Distribution runs 4, and MIDA's Protect/Destroy runs 5. Each part requires its own successful run. Single-run requirements mean failed extractions add extra attempts on top of the minimum. Our Marathon Contract Boost compresses chain completion by running clean extractions every session.

Which faction contracts are hardest?

Arachne contracts require PvP kills – downing enemy Runners is a hard objective, not optional. MIDA's Priority chains are long and span multiple zones per step. NuCaloric's Data Reconstruction demands visiting 3+ POIs in a single run. CyberAcme and Traxus are generally more accessible with fewer PvP requirements.

Do contracts give faction reputation?

Every completed contract awards reputation. Priority contracts give the largest amounts – typically 150 rep per objective step. Standard contracts average around 60 rep per completion. Reputation accumulates toward faction rank, which unlocks upgrade tree tiers and Armory access.
