Taraxippos is a Legendary Strand Scout Rifle that joined Destiny 2 during Guardian Games 2023. It is the first Legendary scout with the Strand element, allowing players to utilize the new subclass's power in long-range combat scenarios. "Taraxippos" comes from a mythological reference (a spirit that frightens horses – fitting for a race/competition theme) and lives up to a spirited reputation in the game.

This scout rifle is a Lightweight Frame, meaning it fires at 200 rounds per minute and grants bonus mobility when wielded. Lightweight scouts are known for their speed and agility: Taraxippos exemplifies this with snappy aim-down-sights and quick repositioning. Stat-wise, it has above-average stability, handling, and aim assist for its class​, which makes landing consecutive precision shots easier. Its range stat is not particularly high (as a trade-off for those better handling stats), but it's sufficient for most mid-range needs and can be extended with perks.

The gun has an Omolon manufacturer origin (evidenced by its sleek design and the Omolon Fluid Dynamics origin trait). Omolon Fluid Dynamics gives it bonus stability and reload speed in the top half of the magazine – so the first several shots have even less recoil​. This synergizes nicely with a rapid-fire scout, as you often engage with a full mag and benefit from that extra stability on opening shots.

Taraxippos truly shines with its perk pool, which was chosen to appeal to PvE and PvP enthusiasts. In PvE, one standout combination is Enlightened Action + Precision Instrument​. Enlightened Action rewards you for precision hits with increased reload and handling, stacking up to very high values – max stacks can give 100 Handling and 89 Reload on Taraxippos​. Imagine practically instant reloads and very snappy handling after a string of headshots, it turns Taraxippos into a frenzy of constant fire. Meanwhile, Precision Instrument increases the damage for each precision hit, stacking up damage output significantly if you keep landing crits​. The synergy is clear: Enlightened Action makes it easier to land more crits (by improving gun feel), and Precision Instrument makes those crits hit harder. With both at max stacks, Taraxippos can drop mid-tier enemies in fewer shots than normal and feel superbly responsive.

In PvP, Taraxippos has some intriguing options. Being a scout, its primary competitors are DMT (exotic), Jade Rabbit (exotic), or other 180/200 RPM scouts like Randy's Throwing Knife. Taraxippos's selling point in Crucible is its stability and forgiveness. With perks like Keep Away and Explosive Payload or High Ground, you can have a scout that outranges many primaries and flinches snipers. For example, Keep Away + Explosive Payload would maximize effective range and make each shot cause extra flinch – very annoying for the enemy and consistent two-headshot-one-body kill potential on six resilience Guardians. Keep Away keeps your accuracy high in the ranges you'd typically use a scout. After a kill, Kill Clip lets you 2-tap other Guardians (a headshot and body might suffice under Kill Clip's bonus, depending on light level advantages) – this significantly lowers TTK. Acquiring Taraxippos required dedication during the Guardian Games. Each week of the event, players pushed to get the highest strike scores possible, reaching certain thresholds unlocked up to four reward packages behind the class podium​. Taraxippos was a reward from those packages, meaning you had not only to play but play well (or at least play often) in the Guardian Games playlists. Additionally, any medallion turn-ins could drop it, so everything you did during the event, PvP or PvE, could eventually reward this scout. It made it a bit grindy, but it was free for all players (since Guardian Games is free) and not RNG-heavy (most people earned one by second or third reset of depositing medals).

In the current sandbox, Taraxippos sits in a comfortable spot. Taraxippos, with the right roll, outclasses a god-rolled Night Watch, given it can do similar things and more (plus Strand element). It might not unseat Exotics like Polaris Lance (for infinite explosions) or Dead Man's Tale (leveraging its perks), but as a legendary, it's superb. Importantly, it gives players a strong Strand option for a primary scout, which is helpful because many Strand builds lacked a ranged option to create interactions (like Threadlings at a distance).

In summary, Taraxippos is a versatile, well-rounded scout rifle that can flex into any activity you want. It symbolized Guardian Games class prowess and remains a valuable tool in a Guardian's arsenal, embodying the adaptability and precision that define the scout rifle class.
