Marathon has a lot of systems that are not explained very well. Some become clear after a few raids, but others stay obscure unless you notice them yourself.
These mechanics affect combat, loot, and how certain items behave during raids.
Below are six Marathon mechanics many players miss.
Weather Affects Heat

Marathon uses a heat system instead of a traditional stamina bar.
Sprinting, sliding, and using certain abilities builds heat. When the bar fills, your runner overheats and temporarily loses mobility.
What the game barely explains is that weather conditions affect how heat behaves.
Rain reduces heat buildup, and water cools heat faster.
That means the environment can directly affect how aggressively you move around the map.
During rain or in water-heavy areas, you can often move more freely before overheating.
Item Mods Worth Knowing
Some item modifiers matter much more than others because they affect value, salvage, or risk.
Enduring

On successful extraction, the item's sell value increases.
It can be useful on expensive items, but the risk is high because the value only matters if you extract successfully.
Bloodthirsty

This modifier increases the item's value every time you down an enemy player while carrying it.
If you get downed yourself, the bonus resets.
Materialist and Materialist+

Materialist grants additional Standard and Enhanced salvage on extraction.
Materialist+ grants additional Deluxe and Superior salvage on extraction.
These materials are used for faction upgrades and armory items. Materialist does not stack.
Fragile

If your runner goes DBNO, the item is destroyed immediately.
A single knock can remove the item entirely, which makes it much riskier to carry than normal loot.
Trace Status

Some items in Marathon have Trace Status.
Each time an item is looted from a hostile runner, its trace level decreases. When trace reaches zero, the item can no longer be looted normally.
Instead, it converts into credits.
This is why a weapon can sometimes disappear from a player's inventory and turn into money instead of going into your backpack.
The system prevents certain items from circulating endlessly between players.
Borrowed Items

Marathon also has a system meant to prevent gear trading between players.
If someone brings gear into a raid for another player, the item may receive a Borrowed Item tag.
If that player extracts with the gear, the item returns to the original owner's vault instead of staying with the person who carried it out.
Because of this system, traditional RMT-style gear transfers simply do not work in Marathon. You cannot reliably give weapons or equipment to another player through raids because the game actively returns those items to the original account.
This means progression in Marathon is built around things that cannot be transferred between players:
- faction reputation
- upgrade materials
- armory unlocks
- seasonal progression
- weapon unlocks
For many players, these systems become the real grind. Unlocking factions, gathering upgrade materials, and progressing account systems can take dozens of raids.
If your goal is to speed up that progression instead of spending weeks farming it manually, experienced players can help run those activities efficiently.

These services focus on the parts of the game that actually matter for long-term progression, such as faction leveling, material farming, and account development.
Now that we understand why gear trading does not work in Marathon, let's move on to another mechanic many players overlook.
Compromised Items

Some items can spawn with the Compromised modifier.
On extraction, a compromised item is destroyed unless you have a Matter Fixative in your inventory.
Matter Fixative drops randomly from UESC forces during the raid. In practice, that usually means you need to farm UESC enemies during that run if you want to secure compromised loot.
If you extract without a Matter Fixative, the item is destroyed.
Blue Blood Trails

When a player is downed and starts crawling, they leave behind a blue blood trail.
This trail shows where they moved after being knocked and can reveal useful information during a fight:
- where the player tried to hide
- where teammates may attempt a revive
- how the fight moved through the area
If the trail leads into a building or around a corner, a teammate may be nearby covering the revive.
Many players ignore these trails even though they provide free tracking information during PvP fights.
Final Thoughts
Marathon hides quite a few mechanics that the game barely explains, and understanding them early can give you a real advantage during raids.
Things like weather affecting heat generation, value-scaling item modifiers, and trace status quietly influence movement, economy, and loot decisions.

FAQ
Blue blood trails appear when a player is downed and crawling. They show the exact path the player took after being knocked. This can reveal where the player is hiding and where their teammates might attempt a revive.
The Vintage modifier increases an item’s sell value every time you successfully extract with it. If another player later loots that item, the increased value remains and continues stacking.
Bloodthirsty increases the value of an item every time you down an enemy player while carrying it. However, if you get downed yourself, the value bonus resets.
Trace Status limits how many times an item can circulate between players. Each time the item is looted from a hostile runner, its trace level decreases. When it reaches zero, the item converts directly into credits instead of being looted.
Borrowed Items are gear brought into a raid for another player. If someone extracts with a borrowed item, it automatically returns to the original owner’s vault instead of staying with the player who carried it out.
Because of this system, transferring weapons or items between players isn’t reliable. If you want to get specific gear consistently, the safer approach is targeted farming. Many players use services like LevelUpper Marathon boosting where experienced players run raids specifically to farm the weapons or gear you want in a completely legitimate way.
Marathon uses a heat system instead of stamina, and weather conditions affect how quickly heat builds up. Heat storms increase heat generation, while rain and deep water help cool heat faster.
